Trains in Bulgaria are very old but fairly inexpensive. Bulgarian trains are run by Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ). There is a sleeper service from to Sofia from Varna and Bourgas (approx 7 hours) for those who would like to visit the capital. Our advice if you use the trains stay in your seat when possible and keep children supervised as it is not uncommon for the external doors to burst open as the train is moving.
